Flashback Friday: The Mountaineers in Combat

In the days leading up to the 2010 football season Nike selected a few schools to be apart of Nike's Pro Combat uniform series. WVU was to be one of the schools to wear these special uniforms that had the latest uniform technology. The Mountaineers were scheduled to wear said uniforms at Heinz Field in Pittsburgh against the Pitt Panthers who also had Pro Combat uniforms of their own.

As far as the design of the uniforms they had very little of the school colors of Gold and Blue but instead featured a coal design. The coal pattern adorned the helmets and various parts throughout the uniform. The uniforms were a tribute to the 29 coal miners who were killed in Upper Big Branch Mine disaster earlier in the year and had a memorial decal on the back of the helmets.

It also marked for the first time since 1979 the Mountaineers didn't have a blue helmet with a gold "Flying WV"

The Mountaineers were victorious against the Pitt Panthers that day and wore them once more in the 2010 Champs Sports Bowl against NC State.
